About Toyota Center

The Toyota Center is the home of the Houston Rockets of the NBA. The arena sits in downtown Houston, and it is accessible to anyone who comes into the center of the city. The building was completed as a replacement for the Summit which housed the Rockets and Houston Aeros until Toyota Center was finished. Toyota paid $100 million for naming rights of the stadium, and the city split costs with the Rockets. Toyota’s influence is felt to this day in television broadcasts which use aerial shots of the stadium. Toyota has their name on the roof of the building, and it is one of the most identifiable spaces in the NBA. The site was originally going to be controlled by the Rockets and Aeros, but the Aeros were cut out of the deal to make it tenable for the city.

#1: Basketball
The Houston Rockets are the primary tenants of the building. It has been tailored to the needs of the franchise, and it is used as a primary practice space for the Rockets. The Rockets won their two NBA championships in the old Summit, but the Rockets have enjoyed success since moving to the Toyota Center. They are currently one of the best team in the NBA, and they feature two players who will vie for MVP honors.

The Toyota Center became the saving grace for the Rockets. Owner Leslie Alexander wanted a new stadium in the city, but he felt that he could not get a deal that was beneficial for his team. Alexander began negotiating with Louisville, Kentucky on a move, but plans with the city came through at the last minute to get the Toyota Center built.

#2: College Basketball
The Toyota Center has hosted regional games in the NCAA Basketball Tournament since it opened. The arena has been host to some of the greatest games of the past 10 years in the tournament, and it will play a part in the 2016 Final Four. The 2016 Final Four is scheduled for Houston, and The Toyota Center will play host to the Division II and III National Championships during the Final Four weekend.

#3: Cultural Significance
The Toyota Center has become a cultural icon in the world of sports. It is one of the few stadiums in sports that people recognize immediately. It is a beautiful new building in the heart of a thriving city, and the building is due to be upgraded to serve even more basketball fans in the future. The Rockets can call this building home for decades to come.
