About Target Center
Teams Playing in the Target Center
The Timberwolves failed to make the postseason during their first seven years, but then reached them during each of their next eight campaigns, beginning in 1997. Prior to the opening of the Target Center, the Timberwolves spent their first season in the NBA playing in the since-imploded Metrodome.
The first seven of the team’s playoff appearances lasted just one round, but during the 2004 postseason, the team reached the Western Conference finals, playing against the Los Angeles Lakers. However, since that effort, the team has failed to reach the postseason.
The Lynx first played in the arena during their inaugural campaign of 1999, and during their first 12 seasons, only reached the postseason in 2003 and 2004 by playing in the conference semifinals.
However, since 2011, the team has been a perennial WNBA powerhouse, winning the league title in both 2011 and 2013. In between, the team reached the WNBA Finals, while the squad went as far as the conference finals in 2014.
In 2015, the arena will serve as a stop on a 12-city PowerShares tennis series, which is a circuit for professional tennis players 30 and older.
Teams that once played there competed in Arena Football, Lingerie Football and Roller Hockey, with only the latter lasting more than a few seasons.
The facility is located just a block away from three public transportation options, and is connected by a skyway to a number of different buildings in the downtown area. That issue becomes quite relevant during the winter months when very cold weather is the norm for much of the state.
The arena is situated just across the street from Target Field, the home of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Minnesota Twins. The two facilities share a parking lot, though generally, the only conflict that comes with regard to scheduling comes in the month of April, when the basketball season is coming to an end and the baseball season is getting underway.
Within the building itself, but accessible from the street, are two businesses: Hubert’s Sports Bar & Grill and a Lifetime Fitness center.
