Foxborough/Boston InformationFoxboro, MA, is a beautiful New England town that dates back to before the Revolutionary War. It was settled first in 1704, and was incorporated as a town in 1778, just two years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It is situated about 22 miles south of Boston, MA, and is nearly 18 miles northeast of Providence, RI.
Foxboro is home to two major league sports teams – the New England Patriots, four time winners of the Superbowl, and the New England Revolution, a major league soccer club. It is the site of Gillette Stadium, home field for the New England Patriots.
Aside from the exciting sporting events there is much to do in Foxboro. Because of its age and history there are historical sites to visit, such as the Foxboro Grange Hall, which is on the National Historical Register for Massachusetts and has been preserved as it was since it was erected. There is a non-profit local theater which is the home to the Bay Colony Productions, which is a community theater company that also hosts movies and live performances. This theater hosts the annual Three Stooges Film Festival every year.
For shopping there is Patriot Place, an outdoor shopping complex that boasts entertainment, fine dining, and fast food establishments, as well as shopping choices for all ages.
Outdoor fun in nature is provided by F. Gilbert Hills State Forest, which is over 1,000 acres. This forest is used for every imaginable outdoor pursuit, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, nature observation, bird watching, and cross country skiing. There are stone structures on this land that some experts believe were used by the Algonquin tribes before the town’s founding in 1704.
Another interesting site is Memorial Hall, a monument and stone building in the town’s center that once housed the library. It is now dedicated entirely to those who served in the armed forces, and also presents a permanent collection of historical items relating to the history of the town.
Because of the major league sporting events held in Foxboro, there are ample small inns and bed and breakfast establishments as well as chain motels for the comfort and convenience of the visitor to Foxboro.
Foxboro is a quaint, beautiful little town with much to offer for football and soccer fans as well as those who have other interests.
