About Citi Field

Citi Field has been home to Major League Baseball’s New York Mets since 2009. Here’s a few fun facts about the Queens, NY stadium:

– Citi Field has a crowd capacity of 41,922 people. This was expanded from a previous capacity of 41,800.

– The stadium features six different restaurants.

– Citi Field’s groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 13, 2006. The first game played at the stadium occurred on March 29, 2009 between St. John’s University and Georgetown University, while the Mets’ first regular-season home game was played at Citi Field on April 13, 2009.

– Citi Field was the home of the 2013 All-Star Game, in which the American League All-Stars defeated the National League All-Stars 3-0. Mets rookie Matt Harvey started the game for the National League and pitched two scoreless innings. Mariano Rivera, MLB’s all-time leader in saved games, earned the save in what would be his last season.

– The first no-hitter in Mets history occurred on June 1, 2012 at Citi Field, with Mets starter Johan Santana earning the victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

– Citi Field, located in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens, NY, can easily be accessed via the New York City MTA’s “7” subway train or the Long Island Rail Road at the Mets-Willets Point Station. It is also conveniently located off of Grand Central Parkway and Interstate 678.

– Citi Field stands in what was once the parking lot of Shea Stadium, the Mets’ prior home from 1964 to 2008.

– The design of Citi Field owes largely to Ebbets Field, the legendary home of the Brooklyn (now Los Angeles) Dodgers, particularly the stadium’s rotunda, which is named for Jackie Robinson, former Dodger and the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball.

– Citi Field retains the “home run apple”, a beloved Shea Stadium artifact. Whenever a Mets player hits a home run, a large fiberglass apple rises out of a hat to celebrate the occasion. Though a new apple was built for Citi Field, the old Shea apple was salvaged and now sits in the Jackie Robinson Rotunda.

– David Wright, the Mets’ third baseman and current team captain, hit the first home run at Citi Field on April 13, 2009, the team’s first opening day game, against the San Diego Padres.

– The New York Mets’ inaugural season occurred in 1962. They have won two world championships: 1969 and 1986, and four National League pennants: 1969, 1973, 1986, and 2000.
